What Is Attack Envelope?

The Attack Envelope Formula

Sound(t) = Volume × (1 - e-t/τ) × Sample(t)

Where τ (tau) = Attack Time / 3. The higher the attack time, the slower the note blooms!

The attack envelope controls how quickly a note reaches its full volume after you press a key. Think of it as the "breath" behind each note:

0 ms

Instant Attack
Sharp, articulate start - like a staccato flute

200 ms

Soft Attack
Gentle, breathy beginning - like morning mist

500 ms

Slow Bloom
Gradual swell - emotional, cinematic

800 ms

Ethereal Rise
Dramatic, atmospheric build-up

Try This Example

Set Attack Time to 400ms and play a slow, ascending scale. Each note will bloom like a gentle breath - perfect for ambient or meditation music!

Complete Controls Guide

1. Core Sound Shaping Controls

🔊 VOLUME (0-100%) - Controls overall loudness. Start at 70-80% for comfortable listening.

🎵 PITCH SHIFT (-12 to +12 semitones) - Transposes the entire instrument up or down. Great for matching other instruments or changing the mood.

⚡ PLAYBACK SPEED (0.5x to 2.0x) - Changes the playback rate of samples. Lower speeds create deeper, longer tones; higher speeds create brighter, shorter sounds.

🎵 ATTACK TIME (0-800ms) - The star feature! Controls how quickly each note reaches full volume:

  • 0-100ms: Natural pan flute articulation
  • 100-300ms: Soft, breathy beginnings
  • 300-600ms: Emotional swells, cinematic rises
  • 600-800ms: Ethereal, atmospheric blooms

2. Playing the Virtual Pan Flute

You have multiple ways to play:

  • Click/Touch: Tap any key with your mouse or finger
  • Computer Keyboard: Use the labeled keys - white keys use letters, black keys use numbers and function keys
  • Drag Play: Click and drag across keys for glissando effects

Keyboard Shortcut Quick Reference

Spacebar - Toggle Sustain Pedal
Letters (Q,W,E,R,T,Y...) - White keys (natural notes)
Numbers (1,2,3...) - Black keys (sharps/flats)

3. The 25+ Effects Suite

🌊 REVERB - Add space and depth (concert hall, cathedral)
⏱️ DELAY - Create echoes and rhythmic repeats
🎵 CHORUS - Thicken the sound like multiple flutes
🌀 PHASER - Sweeping, swirling modulation
✨ FLANGER - Jet-like swoosh effect
💓 TREMOLO - Rapid volume pulsing
🎸 WAH-WAH - Classic filter sweep
🔔 RING MOD - Metallic, bell-like tones
📼 LO-FI - Vintage, degraded sound quality
📻 TAPE SAT - Warm tape saturation
💾 BITCRUSHER - Retro video game sounds
📊 COMPRESSOR - Smooth out volume dynamics
💥 DISTORTION - Add grit and edge
🔽 LOW-PASS - Muffle/soften the sound
🔼 HIGH-PASS - Remove bass frequencies

Create Your Signature Sound

Ambient Pan Flute: Attack 400ms + Reverb 60% + Delay 30% + Low-pass filter
Traditional Folk: Attack 50ms + Chorus 25% + Light Reverb 25%
Cinematic Swells: Attack 700ms + Reverb 70% + Tape Saturation + Slow Tremolo

4. 10-Band Equalizer (EQ)

The EQ allows precise tonal shaping. Here's what each band controls for pan flute:

FrequencyEffect on Pan FluteSuggested Use
31-63 HzSub-bass rumbleCut to remove muddiness
125-250 HzWarmth and bodyBoost for fuller sound (+2dB)
500 Hz-1kHzPresence and projectionBoost to cut through mix (+3dB)
2k-4kHzClarity and attackBoost for articulation (+2dB)
8k-16kHzAir and shimmerBoost for brightness (+1-2dB)

Pan Flute EQ Preset

For an authentic, warm pan flute sound: Boost 250Hz (+3dB), Boost 1kHz (+2dB), Boost 4kHz (+1.5dB), Cut 63Hz (-2dB). This enhances the natural woody character while removing rumble!

5. Transpose Feature

Transpose shifts every note up or down in semitones. This is incredibly useful for:

  • Playing songs in different keys without relearning fingerings
  • Matching the pitch of backing tracks or other instruments
  • Exploring different musical modes easily

Transpose Example

Want to play a song in the key of D major but only know the C major fingering? Set Transpose to +2 and play your C major patterns - you'll hear D major!

6. Recording Your Performance

The built-in WAV recorder captures everything - every note, effect, attack shape, and EQ setting:

  • [ RECORD ] - Start recording (button turns red, pulses)
  • [ STOP ] - Stop recording (same button)
  • [ PLAY ] - Listen to your recorded performance
  • [ SAVE ] - Download as WAV file

Recording Tips

For best results: Set your attack and effects BEFORE recording. Practice your piece a few times, then record. Use sustain pedal for smooth legato passages!

15 Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes Attack Envelope special for pan flute?

Pan flutes naturally have a soft, breathy attack. The attack envelope lets you exaggerate or minimize this characteristic - from instant, crisp articulation to extremely slow, swelling blooms that are impossible on a real pan flute!

2. Why can't I hear any sound?

Most browsers require a "user gesture" to enable audio. Click anywhere on the page or press any key to activate sound. Also check your device volume and that samples are loaded (check the stats display).

3. How does Attack Time affect different playing styles?

Low attack (0-100ms) works great for fast, articulate melodies. Medium attack (200-400ms) is perfect for slow, expressive phrases. High attack (500-800ms) creates dramatic swells ideal for ambient or cinematic music.

4. Can I use this on my phone or tablet?

Yes! The interface is fully touch-responsive. Tap keys to play, and pinch-to-zoom to see all 61 keys. The interface automatically adjusts for smaller screens.

5. What's the difference between Pitch Shift and Transpose?

Pitch Shift changes the pitch of the sound sample itself (like speeding up a tape). Transpose changes which note plays when you press a key (like moving your hand on the instrument). Both affect pitch but sound slightly different!

6. How do I reset all settings to default?

Use the individual reset buttons next to each control. For a complete reset, refresh the page and click anywhere to re-enable audio. The EQ has its own "RESET ALL EQ BANDS" button.

7. Can I use a MIDI keyboard?

Currently, the Pan Flute Studio supports mouse/touch and computer keyboard input. MIDI support is planned for a future update!

8. Why are there 61 keys instead of 88?

61 keys (5 octaves) covers the full practical range of the pan flute and most musical genres. It's the standard size for portable keyboards and keeps the interface manageable on all devices.

9. How do the effects process with attack envelope?

Effects are applied AFTER the attack envelope. This means reverb and delay will respond to your attack shape - slow attacks create gradual reverb blooms, while fast attacks create immediate reflections!

10. Can I save my effect presets?

Preset saving is coming soon! For now, take screenshots of your settings or use the recording feature to capture your performances with those settings.

11. What's the maximum recording length?

The recorder can capture several minutes of performance, depending on your browser's memory. For best results, keep recordings under 5 minutes.

12. Why does the sound sometimes crackle?

Crackling can happen when playing many notes at once or with CPU-heavy effects. Try reducing active effects, closing other browser tabs, or lowering the polyphony (don't hold too many keys at once).

13. Can I play chords on pan flute?

Yes! The Pan Flute Studio supports polyphony (multiple notes simultaneously). You can play chords, but remember that traditional pan flutes are monophonic - chords create a unique, ensemble-like sound!

14. How do I know which computer key plays which note?

Each virtual key displays its corresponding computer key in a small label. White keys use letters (Q,W,E,R,T,Y...), black keys use numbers (1,2,3...) and function keys (F1,F2...).

15. Is this really free? Can I use recordings commercially?

Absolutely free! No signup, no credit card needed. And yes, all music you create is yours to use commercially - for YouTube, albums, films, or any other project. No royalties or credits required!
