Getting Started: A Simple Guide

1. Playing the Virtual Oboe

You have two ways to play the GDP-500 INFINITE FX:

  • Click or Touch: Simply click on any key with your mouse, or tap on touchscreen devices.
  • Computer Keyboard: Use your PC keyboard - each key is labeled with its corresponding computer key!

Try This Example

Press the 'Q' key on your keyboard - you'll hear the first note (C). Press 'W' for the next note (D), and so on. The keys are arranged like a real piano keyboard!

2. Understanding the Keyboard Layout

The white keys on your computer keyboard are arranged in two rows:

Row 1 (Top)Keys
First OctaveTab Q W E R T Y U I O P [ ] \
Second OctaveA S D F G H J K L ; ' Enter
Third OctaveZ X C V B N M , . /

Pro Tip

Look at the labels on each virtual key - they show you which computer key to press. Black keys use number keys (1,2,3...) and function keys (F1, F2...).

Understanding the Sound Formula

How Your Sound is Created

Final Sound = (Oboe Sample × Volume) + (Effects Processing) + (EQ Adjustment)

Each note you play goes through this processing chain in real-time!

3. Mastering the Controls

🎚️ Volume (0-100%) - Controls how loud the instrument sounds. Start at 80% for comfortable listening.

🎵 Pitch Shift (-12 to +12 semitones) - Changes the pitch of all notes. Use +1 to shift up one half-step (like using a capo on guitar).

⚡ Playback Speed (0.5x to 2.0x) - Changes how fast the sound plays. Lower speeds create deeper, longer sounds; higher speeds create brighter, shorter sounds.

Real-World Example

Set Pitch Shift to +5 and Speed to 0.75x. Play a simple melody - it will sound like a deeper, warmer oboe! Perfect for creating atmospheric background music.

4. Using the Transpose Feature

Transpose lets you shift all notes up or down without changing your finger position. This is incredibly useful for:

  • Playing songs in different keys without learning new fingerings
  • Matching the pitch of other instruments
  • Simplifying difficult key signatures

Transpose Formula

New Pitch = Original Pitch + Transpose Value

Example: If you press the C key (note C) and Transpose is +2, you'll actually hear a D note!

The Effects Suite Explained

The GDP-500 comes with over 25 professional audio effects. Here's what each one does:

🌊 REVERB - Adds echo and space (like playing in a concert hall)
⏱️ DELAY - Repeats your notes like an echo
🎵 CHORUS - Makes it sound like multiple instruments playing together
🌀 PHASER - Creates a sweeping, swirling effect
✨ FLANGER - Similar to phaser but with a jet-like sound
💓 TREMOLO - Rapid volume changes (vibrato for volume)
🎸 WAH-WAH - The classic "wah" sound (like a guitar pedal)
🔔 RING MOD - Creates metallic, bell-like tones
📼 LO-FI - Makes it sound like an old recording
📻 TAPE SAT - Adds warmth like vintage tape recorders
💾 BITCRUSHER - Creates retro video game sounds
📊 COMPRESSOR - Evens out volume changes
💥 DISTORTION - Adds grit and edge
🔽 LOW-PASS - Removes high frequencies (muffled sound)
🔼 HIGH-PASS - Removes low frequencies (thin sound)

Create Your First Effect Chain

Try this combination: Turn on Reverb (mix 40%) + Delay (mix 30%, time 300ms) + Chorus (mix 35%). Play a slow melody - it will sound like you're in a cathedral with a choir of oboes!

5. The 10-Band Equalizer (EQ)

The EQ lets you boost or cut specific frequency ranges. Think of it as a tone control with 10 different knobs!

FrequencyWhat It ControlsBoost Effect
31-125 HzBass / Low endMore warmth and body
250-500 HzLower midsMore fullness
1k-4k HzMidrangeMore presence and clarity
8k-16k HzTreble / High endMore brightness and air

EQ Tip for Oboe

Boost 500Hz and 1kHz slightly (+3dB) to make the oboe cut through other instruments. Boost 8kHz (+2dB) for extra sparkle!

Recording Your Music

The sustain pedal (🦶 SUSTAIN) makes notes continue ringing after you release the key. This is great for:

  • Creating smooth, connected phrases (legato)
  • Playing chords that ring together
  • Adding emotional, cinematic feel to slow melodies

Keyboard Shortcut

Press the SPACEBAR on your computer keyboard to toggle the sustain pedal on/off while playing!

15 Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to install any software to use this?

No installation needed! The GDP-500 INFINITE FX runs entirely in your web browser. Just open the page and start playing.

2. Why can't I hear any sound?

Most browsers require a "user gesture" to enable audio. Simply click anywhere on the page or press any key to activate sound. Also check that your device volume is turned up.

3. Can I use this on my phone or tablet?

Yes! The GDP-500 is fully touch-responsive. Tap any key to play, and use pinch-to-zoom to see all 61 keys. The interface automatically adjusts for smaller screens.

4. What's the difference between Pitch Shift and Transpose?

Pitch Shift changes the pitch of the sound itself (like speeding up or slowing down a tape). Transpose shifts which note you hear when you press a key (like changing the key of the instrument). Both affect pitch, but in technically different ways.

5. How do I reset all settings to default?

Click the ⟳ RESET button next to each control. For a complete reset, refresh the page and click anywhere to re-enable audio.

6. Can I use a MIDI keyboard with this?

Currently, the GDP-500 supports mouse/touch and computer keyboard input. MIDI support is planned for a future update!

7. Why are there 61 keys? Isn't a full piano 88 keys?

61 keys (5 octaves) is the standard range for most portable keyboards and synthesizers. It covers the full range of the oboe and most popular music, while keeping the interface manageable.

8. How do the effects work together?

Effects are processed in series (one after another). The order is: Reverb → Delay → EQ → Volume. Each effect processes the sound from the previous effect.

9. Can I save my effect presets?

Preset saving is coming in a future update. For now, take screenshots of your settings or use the WAV recorder to capture your performances.

10. What's the maximum recording length?

The recorder can capture performances up to several minutes long, depending on your browser's memory. For best results, keep recordings under 5 minutes.

11. Why does the sound sometimes crackle or pop?

This can happen if you're playing many notes at once or using CPU-intensive effects. Try reducing the number of active effects or closing other browser tabs to free up processing power.

12. Can I play chords (multiple notes at once)?

Yes! The GDP-500 supports polyphony - you can play up to 8-12 notes simultaneously, depending on your device. Hold down multiple keys to play chords!

13. How do I know which computer key plays which note?

Each virtual key shows its corresponding computer key in a small label. White keys use letters (Q,W,E,R,T,Y...), black keys use numbers and function keys (F1,F2,1,2...).

14. Is this really free to use?

Absolutely! The GDP-500 INFINITE FX is completely free - no signup, no credit card, no hidden costs. Just open and play!

15. Can I use my recordings commercially?

Yes! All music you create with the GDP-500 is yours to use however you like - for YouTube videos, albums, commercials, or any other project. No royalties or credits required!
