Getting Started: A Simple Guide

1. Playing the Virtual Clarinet

You have two easy ways to play the GDP-500 INFINITE FX Clarinet:

  • Click or Touch: Simply click on any key with your mouse, or tap on touchscreen devices.
  • Computer Keyboard: Use your PC keyboard - each virtual key shows its corresponding computer key!

Try This Example

Press the 'A' key on your keyboard - you'll hear a beautiful clarinet note. Press 'S' for the next note, and so on. The keyboard is arranged like a real piano keyboard!

2. Understanding the Keyboard Layout

The white keys on your computer keyboard are arranged in three convenient rows:

RowKeysNotes
Top RowTab Q W E R T Y U I O P [ ] \C D E F G A B C
Middle RowA S D F G H J K L ; ' EnterC D E F G A B C
Bottom RowZ X C V B N M , . /C D E F G A B

Pro Tip

Look at the labels on each virtual key - they show you exactly which computer key to press. Black keys use numbers (1,2,3...) and function keys (F1, F2...).

Understanding the Sound Formula

How Your Clarinet Sound is Created

Final Sound = (Clarinet Sample × Volume) + (Effects Processing) + (EQ Adjustment)

Every note you play goes through this real-time processing chain!

3. Mastering the Core Controls

🔊 VOLUME (0-100%) - Controls how loud the clarinet sounds. Start at 82% for a comfortable listening level. Lower volume creates softer, more intimate passages; higher volume is great for bold, expressive playing.

Volume Example

Set Volume to 100% and play a high note - it will sound powerful and present, perfect for solo passages. Set Volume to 40% for background accompaniment.

🎵 PITCH SHIFT (-12 to +12 semitones) - Changes the pitch of all notes. This is like having a capo on a guitar! Use +1 to shift up one half-step, -1 to shift down.

Pitch Shift Example

Set Pitch Shift to +5 and play a simple melody. The entire piece will sound higher, allowing you to play in different keys without changing your finger positions!

⚡ PLAYBACK SPEED (0.5x to 2.0x) - Changes how fast the sound plays. Lower speeds create deeper, longer sounds; higher speeds create brighter, shorter sounds.

Speed Formula

New Duration = Original Duration ÷ Speed Factor

Example: A 1-second note at 2x speed becomes a 0.5-second note (faster, higher pitch). At 0.5x speed, it becomes a 2-second note (slower, deeper pitch).

4. Using the Transpose Feature

Transpose lets you shift all notes up or down without changing your finger position. This is incredibly useful for:

  • Playing in different keys - Match any song without learning new fingerings
  • Accompanying other instruments - Match the pitch of singers or other instruments
  • Simplifying difficult passages - Play in easier keys and transpose to the correct pitch

Transpose Formula

New Pitch = Original Pitch + Transpose Value

Example: Press the C key (note C) and set Transpose to +2. You'll actually hear a D note! Press the same physical key, get a different pitch.

The Effects Suite Explained

The GDP-500 comes with 3 core effects (with more coming in updates). Here's what each one does:

🌊 REVERB - Adds echo and space (like playing in a concert hall or cathedral)
⏱️ DELAY - Repeats your notes like an echo, creating rhythmic patterns
🎵 CHORUS - Makes it sound like multiple clarinets playing together in unison

Effect Parameters Explained

Reverb Settings:

  • Mix (0-100%) - How much reverb effect vs. dry (original) sound. 50% = half reverb, half original.
  • Decay (0.5-5 seconds) - How long the reverb echo lasts. Longer decay = more spacious sound.

Delay Settings:

  • Mix (0-100%) - Balance between delayed and original sound.
  • Time (50-500 ms) - Time between repeats. 300ms = 0.3 seconds between echoes.
  • Feedback (0-80%) - How many repeats you hear. Higher feedback = more repeats.

Create Your First Effect Chain

Try this magical combination: Reverb (mix 40%, decay 2s) + Delay (mix 30%, time 400ms, feedback 40%). Play a slow, simple melody - it will sound like you're playing in a grand cathedral with a beautiful echoing clarinet!

5. The 10-Band Equalizer (EQ)

The EQ is like a sophisticated tone control with 10 different knobs. Each knob adjusts a specific frequency range:

FrequencyWhat It ControlsBoost EffectCut Effect
31-63 HzSub-bassDeep rumbleCleaner low end
125-250 HzBass / WarmthMore body, warmthLess muddiness
500-1000 HzLower midsMore fullnessLess boxiness
2000-4000 HzUpper mids / PresenceMore clarity, attackLess harshness
8000-16000 HzTreble / AirMore sparkle, brightnessLess sibilance

EQ Tip for Clarinet

For a classic warm clarinet sound: Boost 125Hz (+3dB) for warmth, boost 1000Hz (+2dB) for presence, and slightly boost 4000Hz (+1dB) for clarity. This creates that beautiful, expressive woodwind tone!

Recording Your Music

6. Using the WAV Recorder

The built-in recorder captures everything you play, including all effects and EQ settings - exactly as you hear it!

  • [ RECORD ] - Click to start recording (button turns red with pulsing animation)
  • [ STOP ] - Click the same button to stop recording
  • [ PLAY ] - Listen to your recording to review your performance
  • [ SAVE ] - Download your performance as a high-quality WAV file

Complete Recording Workflow

Step 4: Click [STOP] when finished
Step 5: Click [PLAY] to review your performance

7. Sustain Pedal

The sustain pedal (🦶 SUSTAIN) makes notes continue ringing after you release the key. This is essential for:

  • Creating smooth, connected phrases (legato playing)
  • Playing chords that ring together harmoniously
  • Adding emotional, cinematic feel to slow melodies
  • Simulating the natural resonance of an acoustic space

Keyboard Shortcut

Press the SPACEBAR on your computer keyboard to toggle the sustain pedal on/off while playing! This is much faster than clicking the button with your mouse.

15 Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to install any software to use this?

No installation needed at all! The GDP-500 INFINITE FX Clarinet runs entirely in your web browser. Just open the page, click anywhere to activate audio, and start playing immediately.

2. Why can't I hear any sound when I first open the page?

Most modern browsers require a "user gesture" (like a click or key press) to enable audio playback. Simply click anywhere on the page or press any key on your keyboard to activate sound. Also check that your device volume is turned up!

3. Can I use this on my phone or tablet?

Absolutely! The GDP-500 is fully touch-responsive. Tap any key with your finger to play, and use pinch-to-zoom to see all 61 keys. The interface automatically adjusts for smaller screens.

4. What's the difference between Pitch Shift and Transpose?

Great question! Pitch Shift changes the pitch of the sound itself (like speeding up or slowing down a tape recording). Transpose shifts which note you hear when you press a key (like changing the key of the instrument without changing finger positions). Both affect pitch, but in technically different ways. For most musical purposes, Transpose is what you want for playing in different keys.

5. How do I reset all settings to default?

Click the ⟳ RESET button next to each individual control. For a complete reset of everything, simply refresh the page and click anywhere to re-enable audio. Your recordings will be lost on refresh, so save them first!

6. Can I use a MIDI keyboard with this?

Currently, the GDP-500 supports mouse/touch and computer keyboard input. MIDI controller support is planned for a future update! For now, the PC keyboard mapping is designed to be intuitive and playable.

7. Why are there 61 keys? Isn't a full piano 88 keys?

61 keys (5 octaves) is the standard range for most portable keyboards, synthesizers, and woodwind instruments like clarinet. It covers the full practical range of the clarinet and 95% of popular music, while keeping the interface manageable on screens of all sizes.

8. How do the effects work together?

Effects are processed in series (one after another) in this order: Reverb → Delay → EQ → Volume. Each effect processes the sound coming from the previous effect. This order is carefully chosen to create the most natural and musical sound.

9. Can I save my effect presets for later?

Preset saving is coming in a future update! For now, we recommend taking screenshots of your favorite settings or using the WAV recorder to capture your performances with those settings. You can also note down your settings manually.

10. What's the maximum recording length?

The recorder can capture performances up to several minutes long, depending on your browser's available memory. For best results, we recommend keeping recordings under 5 minutes. Longer recordings may cause performance issues on some devices.

11. Why does the sound sometimes crackle or pop?

This can happen if you're playing many notes at once (polyphony) or using CPU-intensive effects. Try reducing the number of active effects, closing other browser tabs, or restarting your browser to free up processing power. Most modern computers handle 8-12 simultaneous notes easily.

12. Can I play chords (multiple notes at once)?

Yes! The GDP-500 supports polyphony - you can play up to 12-16 notes simultaneously, depending on your device's processing power. Hold down multiple keys to play chords, just like a real piano or keyboard!

13. How do I know which computer key plays which note?

Each virtual key shows its corresponding computer key in a small label right on the key! White keys use letters (Q,W,E,R,T,Y...), black keys use numbers (1,2,3...) and function keys (F1, F2...). The labels are designed to be clear and easy to read.

14. Is this really free to use?

Absolutely 100% free! The GDP-500 INFINITE FX Clarinet is completely free to use - no signup, no credit card, no hidden costs, no time limits. Just open your browser and start making music!

15. Can I use my recordings commercially (YouTube, albums, etc.)?

Yes! All music you create with the GDP-500 is 100% yours to use however you like. You can use it for YouTube videos, albums, commercials, film scoring, games, or any other commercial project. No royalties, no credits required, no restrictions whatsoever!
