What is Attack Envelope? (The Secret to Expressive Playing)

Attack Envelope Explained

Attack Time controls how quickly a note reaches its full volume after you press the key.

🎹 0ms Attack (Default Piano) → Instant, percussive sound - great for staccato and rhythmic playing

🎹 200-400ms Attack → Gentle swell - perfect for ambient and cinematic passages

🎹 500-800ms Attack → Slow bloom - creates ethereal, pad-like textures

Attack Envelope Formula

Volume(t) = 0 → (if t < AttackTime) → Linear Ramp → Target Volume

At 0ms: Sound starts instantly. At 800ms: Takes 0.8 seconds to reach full volume.

Try This Example

Step 1: Set Attack Time to 0ms and play a chord - you'll hear a sharp, percussive attack like a classical piano.
Step 2: Increase Attack Time to 400ms and play the same chord - notice how the sound slowly blooms into existence!
Step 3: Try 600ms with reverb enabled for an ambient, cinematic pad sound.

Understanding the Sound Processing Chain

Complete Sound Formula

Output = AttackEnvelope( PianoSample × Volume × PitchShift × Speed ) + Effects(Reverb, Delay, Chorus) + EQ(Boost/Cut)

Each note you play goes through this entire processing chain in real-time!

Getting Started: Quick Guide

1. Playing the Piano

You have two ways to play:

  • Click or Touch: Tap any key with your mouse or finger on touchscreens
  • Computer Keyboard: Use your PC keyboard - each virtual key shows its corresponding computer key!

Pro Tip: Spacebar Sustain

Press the SPACEBAR to activate the sustain pedal! Notes will continue ringing even after you release the keys - perfect for creating connected, flowing phrases.

2. Core Controls Explained

🔊 VOLUME (0-100%) - Controls overall loudness. Start at 85% for comfortable listening.

🎵 PITCH SHIFT (-12 to +12 semitones) - Changes the pitch of all notes. +12 = one full octave higher! Great for transposing songs to different keys.

⚡ PLAYBACK SPEED (0.5x to 2.0x) - Changes playback speed. Lower speeds create deeper, longer sounds (like slowing down a tape).

🎹 ATTACK TIME (0-800ms) - Our signature feature! Controls how quickly notes reach full volume.

Real-World Example: Creating a Cinematic Pad

Settings to try:
• Attack Time: 600ms
• Reverb: ON (mix 50%)
• Delay: ON (mix 25%, time 400ms)
• Play a slow chord progression - you'll create an atmospheric, cinematic pad perfect for film scoring!

3. Transpose Feature

Transpose shifts all notes up or down without changing your finger positions. This is incredibly useful for:

  • Playing songs in different keys without learning new fingerings
  • Matching the pitch of other instruments or recordings
  • Simplifying difficult key signatures

Transpose Formula

Output Pitch = Original Pitch + Transpose Value

Example: Press the C key with Transpose = +5, you'll hear an F note!

The Complete Effects Suite

The Grand Piano comes with 3 core studio effects that can transform your sound dramatically:

🌊 REVERB - Adds space and ambiance (mix: 0-100%, decay: 0.5-5s). Small room to massive cathedral!
⏱️ DELAY - Creates echoes (mix: 0-100%, time: 50-500ms, feedback: 0-80%). Great for rhythmic patterns.
🎵 CHORUS - Makes it sound like multiple instruments playing together (mix: 0-100%, rate: 0.5-8Hz).

4. 10-Band Equalizer (EQ)

The EQ lets you boost or cut specific frequency ranges to shape your tone:

FrequencyWhat It ControlsBoost Effect
31-125 HzBass / Low endMore warmth and body (great for left hand)
250-500 HzLower midsMore fullness and power
1k-4k HzMidrangeMore presence and clarity (makes piano cut through)
8k-16k HzTreble / High endMore brightness and sparkle (adds "air")

EQ Preset for Classical Piano

Boost 500Hz (+3dB) for warmth, boost 2kHz (+2dB) for clarity, slightly reduce 8kHz (-2dB) to soften harshness. This creates a rich, concert hall piano sound!

6. Sustain Pedal

The sustain pedal (🦶 SUSTAIN) makes notes continue ringing after you release keys. This is essential for:

  • Creating smooth, connected phrases (legato playing)
  • Making chords ring together harmoniously
  • Adding emotional, cinematic feel to slow passages

Note About Attack Time + Sustain

When using long attack times (400ms+), the sustain pedal will keep the note ringing through its attack phase. This can create beautiful, evolving pads. Experiment with different combinations!

15 Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes Attack Envelope special for piano?

Attack Envelope lets you shape the initial moment of each note - from sharp, percussive attacks (0ms) to soft, swelling entrances (800ms). This is usually only found on synthesizers, but we've added it to the grand piano for expressive control!

2. Why can't I hear any sound?

Most browsers require a "user gesture" to enable audio. Simply click anywhere on the page or press any key to activate sound. Also check your device volume and that samples have loaded (look for "Ready: 61/61" in stats).

3. Can I use this on my phone or tablet?

Yes! The Grand Piano is fully touch-responsive. Tap any key to play, and use pinch-to-zoom to navigate the 61-key keyboard. The interface automatically adjusts for smaller screens.

4. What's the difference between Attack Time and Sustain?

Attack Time controls how quickly a note reaches full volume after you press the key. Sustain keeps notes ringing after you release the key. They work together - long attack + sustain = beautiful swelling pads!

5. How do I reset all settings to default?

Click the ⟳ RESET button next to each control. For a complete reset, refresh the page and click anywhere to re-enable audio. All effects and EQ will return to default.

6. Can I use a MIDI keyboard?

Currently, the Grand Piano supports mouse/touch and computer keyboard input. MIDI support is planned for a future update. The computer keyboard mapping gives you 61 keys to play with!

7. Why are there only 61 keys instead of 88?

61 keys (5 octaves) is the standard range for most professional keyboards and covers 95% of all piano music. It's also the optimal size for computer keyboard mapping and mobile screens.

8. How does the 10-band EQ work?

Each EQ band controls a specific frequency range. Moving a slider up (+12dB) boosts that frequency, moving down (-12dB) cuts it. Use this to fix problematic frequencies or enhance desirable ones in your piano sound.

9. Can I save my effect presets?

Preset saving is coming in a future update. For now, use the WAV recorder to capture your performances, or take screenshots of your favorite settings.

10. What's the maximum recording length?

The recorder can capture performances up to several minutes long, depending on your browser's memory. For best results, keep recordings under 5 minutes.

11. Why does the sound sometimes crackle?

This can happen if you're playing many notes at once or using CPU-intensive effects. Try reducing the number of active effects, closing other browser tabs, or lowering the volume slightly to prevent digital clipping.

12. Can I play chords (multiple notes at once)?

Yes! The Grand Piano supports polyphony - you can play up to 8-12 notes simultaneously. Hold down multiple keys to play rich chords and complex harmonies!

13. How do I know which computer key plays which note?

Each virtual key shows its corresponding computer key in a small label. White keys use letters (Q,W,E,R,T,Y...), black keys use numbers (1,2,3...) and function keys (F1,F2...). Look at the key labels!

14. Is this really free to use?

Absolutely! The Grand Classical Piano is completely free - no signup, no credit card, no hidden costs. Just open and start creating music!

15. Can I use my recordings commercially?

Yes! All music you create with the Grand Piano is 100% yours. Use it for YouTube videos, albums, commercials, film scores, or any other project - no royalties or credits required!
