What Makes This Sitar Special?

The Attack Envelope Control - Your Secret Weapon

The most unique feature of this virtual sitar is the Attack Time control (0-800 milliseconds). This revolutionary feature lets you shape the very beginning of each note:

Attack Time Examples

0 ms (Zero Attack): Instant, sharp, percussive sound - like a fast sitar pluck

400 ms (Medium Attack): Smooth, gradual swell - like a slow, meditative stroke

800 ms (Slow Attack): Very gradual volume increase - creates tension and anticipation

How Attack Envelope Works

Volume at time t = Volume × (t / AttackTime) for t < AttackTime

The sound starts at silence and gradually reaches full volume over your chosen attack time!

Musical Applications

Alap (Slow Introduction): Set Attack to 500-800ms for meditative, swelling phrases
Fast Gat (Rhythmic Composition): Set Attack to 0-100ms for crisp, articulate notes
Atmospheric Pad: Set Attack to 600ms + Reverb for ambient soundscapes

Getting Started Guide

1. Playing the Sitar

You have three ways to play:

  • Click or Touch: Simply tap any key on the screen
  • Computer Keyboard: Use the labeled keys - each virtual key shows its computer key!
  • Drag Across Keys: Click and drag your mouse/finger across keys to play glissandos

Sitar Playing Tip

Traditional sitar playing uses a technique called "Meend" - sliding between notes. Try dragging your mouse across adjacent keys while holding the sustain pedal for a similar effect!

2. Understanding the Interface

๐Ÿช• ATTACK TIME (0-800ms) - The star feature! Controls how quickly each note reaches full volume.

  • 0-100ms: Fast, percussive attack - great for rhythmic passages
  • 100-300ms: Natural sitar pluck - authentic traditional sound
  • 300-600ms: Slow swell - meditative and emotional
  • 600-800ms: Very gradual - creates anticipation and tension

๐Ÿ”Š VOLUME (0-100%) - Overall output level. Start at 82% for comfortable listening.

๐ŸŽต PITCH SHIFT (-12 to +12 semitones) - Transposes the pitch of all notes. Great for matching other instruments or singers.

⚡ PLAYBACK SPEED (0.5x to 2.0x) - Changes the playback speed of samples. Lower speeds create deeper, richer tones.

๐ŸŽผ TRANSPOSE (-12 to +12) - Shifts which note you hear when pressing a key. Example: Transpose +2 means pressing C plays D.

Real-World Example: Creating a Raga Mood

For Raga Yaman (evening melody):
Set Attack to 350ms (smooth entry)
Add Reverb (mix 35%, decay 2.5s)
Set Transpose to 0
Play slow, meend-filled phrases using the sustain pedal

The Effects Suite

The GDP-500 comes with essential effects tailored for sitar:

  • ๐ŸŒŠ REVERB - Adds space and depth. Mix 40%, Decay 2.5s for a temple-like atmosphere
  • ⏱️ DELAY - Creates rhythmic echoes. Time 450ms, Feedback 32% for traditional "Jhala" patterns
  • ๐ŸŽต CHORUS - Thickens the sound, simulating multiple sitar strings vibrating together

Signature Sitar Preset

"Temple Evening" Preset:
Attack: 400ms (smooth bloom)
Reverb: 45% mix, 3.0s decay
Delay: 30% mix, 500ms time, 25% feedback
Volume: 85%
Perfect for meditative, atmospheric sitar pieces!

3. The 10-Band Equalizer (EQ)

The EQ helps you shape your sitar's tone to perfection:

FrequencySitar CharacterBoost Effect
31-125 HzBody & ResonanceMore warmth and depth
250-500 HzFundamental tonesFuller, richer sound
1k-4k HzAttack & clarityMore definition and presence
8k-16k HzSympathetic string ringAdds sparkle and air

EQ Tips for Authentic Sitar

Boost 250Hz (+3dB) for warmth, 2kHz (+2dB) for attack clarity, and 8kHz (+1.5dB) for sympathetic string shimmer. Cut 500Hz slightly (-2dB) to reduce muddiness.

Recording Your Sitar Performances

4. Using the WAV Recorder

Capture your sitar creations with the built-in recorder:

  • [ RECORD ] - Starts recording (button turns red with pulse animation)
  • [ STOP ] - Same button stops recording
  • [ PLAY ] - Listen to your recorded performance
  • [ SAVE ] - Download as WAV file (all effects and attack shaping preserved!)

Recording Workflow Example

1. Set Attack Time to desired value (try 300ms for starters)
2. Adjust EQ and effects to taste
3. Click [RECORD] (button turns red)
4. Play your composition using keyboard/mouse
5. Click [STOP]
6. Preview with [PLAY]
7. Click [SAVE] to export your WAV file

5. Sustain Pedal

The sustain pedal (๐Ÿฆถ SUSTAIN) lets notes ring after you release the key. Essential for:

  • Creating the characteristic sitar drone effect
  • Connecting melodic phrases (legato)
  • Simulating sympathetic string resonance

Keyboard Shortcut

Press the SPACEBAR to toggle sustain on/off while playing!

15 Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Attack Time and why is it special for sitar?

Attack Time controls how quickly a note reaches full volume after you press a key. For sitar, this is crucial because traditional playing involves different articulation techniques - from soft, swelling notes (slow attack) to sharp, percussive plucks (fast attack). Our 0-800ms range gives you complete control over this expressive element.

2. Why can't I hear any sound?

Most browsers require a "user gesture" to enable audio. Simply click anywhere on the page or press any key to activate sound. Also check your device volume and ensure the Volume slider is above 0%.

3. Can I play traditional Indian scales (ragas) on this?

Absolutely! The 61-key range covers all 12 notes of the octave, allowing you to play any raga. Use Transpose to shift to different tonic (Sa) positions, and adjust Attack Time to match the mood of different ragas (slow attack for evening ragas, faster for morning ragas).

4. What's the difference between Attack Time and Sustain?

Attack Time shapes the beginning of each note (how quickly it swells in). Sustain affects the end of the note (how long it continues after you release the key). They work together: Attack controls the start, Sustain controls the release.

5. Can I use this on my phone or tablet?

Yes! The interface is fully touch-responsive. Tap any key to play, and use pinch-to-zoom to see all 61 keys. The attack control and all effects work perfectly on mobile devices.

6. How do I reset all settings to default?

Use the individual reset buttons next to each control (Volume, Pitch, Speed, Attack). For a complete reset, refresh the page and click anywhere to re-enable audio.

7. What does the Sympathetic String effect mean?

A real sitar has 11-13 sympathetic strings that vibrate when you play the main strings. Our reverb and EQ settings help simulate this effect - boost the high frequencies (8kHz+) and add reverb to get that characteristic shimmering resonance.

8. Can I play chords on the sitar?

Yes! While traditional sitar is primarily melodic, our virtual sitar supports polyphony. Hold down multiple keys to play chords. Try a slow attack (400ms) with reverb for beautiful, ambient chord pads.

9. How do I create a drone (Tanpura) effect?

Set Attack to 600ms (slow swell), enable Sustain, play the root note (Sa) and fifth (Pa) softly. Add reverb (50% mix) and delay (30% mix). Let the sustain pedal hold the notes for a continuous drone background.

10. What's the maximum recording length?

The recorder can capture several minutes of performance, depending on your browser's memory. For best results, keep recordings under 5 minutes for complex passages with many notes.

11. Can I use a MIDI keyboard with this?

Currently, the Sitar Studio supports mouse/touch and computer keyboard input. MIDI support is planned for a future update to allow connection of external MIDI controllers.

12. Why does the sound sometimes crackle?

Crackling can occur if you're playing many notes simultaneously or using CPU-intensive effects. Try reducing the number of active effects or closing other browser tabs. A fast Attack setting (0-100ms) can also cause momentary CPU spikes.

13. How do I know which computer key plays which note?

Each virtual key shows its corresponding computer key in a small label. White keys use letters (Q,W,E,R,T,Y...), black keys use numbers and function keys (F1,F2,1,2...). The labels are color-coded for easy identification.

14. Is this really free to use?

Absolutely! The Sitar Attack Envelope Studio is completely free - no signup, no credit card, no hidden costs. Just open and start creating beautiful sitar music!

15. Can I use my recordings commercially?

Yes! All music you create with this instrument is yours to use however you like - for YouTube videos, albums, films, or any other project. No royalties or credits required!
